Along with developing transport corridors, investment projects, and trade and economic ties, the countries are beginning to develop a new area of cooperation: energy.
The memorandum on cooperation in the petroleum products sector, signed during President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev's state visit to Kyrgyzstan, marks a shift from political agreements to the implementation of specific economic projects. At a ceremony to exchange 15 documents attended by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov and Kyrgyz Energy Minister Altynbek Rysbekov exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan on cooperation in the supply of petroleum products and a Roadmap for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan in the energy sector for 2026-2028. At first glance, these are merely framework documents.
However, in reality, their significance is much broader. They reflect ongoing changes on the region's energy landscape, where issues of fuel supply diversification are becoming no less important than the development of transport routes and trade links. It's notable that after the signing ceremony, Kyrgyz Energy Minister Altynbek Rysbekov, answering questions from Trend's special correspondent, spoke not about general prospects, but about the practical implementation of the agreements reached.
He said that the parties intend to soon determine specific cooperation mechanisms, supply volumes, and prepare a roadmap for implementing the memorandum. "The memorandum will give us the opportunity to build a good, close partnership. This concerns cooperation specifically in the supply of petroleum products.
We already have preliminary agreements. Now we need to work out the implementation mechanisms: how supplies will be delivered and what path we'll take moving forward," he said. The minister also noted that similar work is underway in the electric power sector.
The parties also signed a roadmap in this area. According to him, Kyrgyzstan has serious intentions to develop cooperation in this area. "I believe that good, friendly relations will develop between our countries in both petroleum products and energy," he said.
