TurkmenGazChykarysh department in Turkmenistan's Lebap region produced around 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the first half of 2026, exceeding the planned volume by 494 million cubic meters. This was reflected in a press release issued by the Turkmengaz State Concern. According to the press release, significant contribution to the result was made by the Demirgazyk-Balguýi section.
It produced 685 million cubic meters of gas against a planned 622.7 million cubic meters, exceeding the target by 10%, Trend calculations show. At the same time, production of gas condensate also exceeded the plan during the reporting period. Specialists produced 16,768 tons against a planned 13,421 tons, exceeding the target by 25%, according to Trend’s calculations.
Lebap is one of Turkmenistan's main natural gas producing regions and hosts a significant share of the country's upstream infrastructure, including fields supplying both the domestic market and export routes. At the same time, expanding gas production has brought greater attention to the environmental dimension of Turkmenistan's energy sector. Alongside efforts to increase output and exports, the country has intensified engagement with international partners on methane emissions reduction, as governments and financial institutions increasingly link long-term energy cooperation with climate commitments and emissions performance.
In this regard, the European Commission told Trend in an exclusive interview that regional cooperation remains the most effective way to address environmental challenges in Central Asia and encouraged Turkmenistan to continue engaging in multilateral environmental initiatives. "Turkmenistan is an important partner for the EU in global Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention to Combat Desertification, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)," a European Commission representative said. According to the official, the EU also encourages Turkmenistan to participate actively in the environmental conventions of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), while policy dialogue continues under the EU for a Green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2029 programme and the regional Team Europe Initiative on Water, Energy and Climate.
The Commission added that climate change is intensifying environmental pressures across the region, including in the Caspian Sea basin, and reaffirmed its expectation that partners, including Turkmenistan, will continue implementing measures that both reduce emissions and strengthen resilience under the Paris Agreement.
