Uzbekistan plans to create 1.3 GW of additional power capacity by upgrading electricity and gas infrastructure across its regions. This was reported in a statement issued by the press service of the Uzbek president following a government meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on work carried out under the “Yangiyul experience.” The approach was launched after the president designated Yangiyul district as a model area for ensuring stable electricity and gas supplies. According to the report, the approach has already covered 916 mahallas (neighborhoods), 832,000 households, 49,000 businesses and more than 2,200 social facilities.
Energy passports and resource-demand balances have been prepared for each mahalla, allowing authorities to identify existing capacity gaps and plan infrastructure upgrades. The need for such measures was highlighted by the condition of existing infrastructure. In 14 districts, authorities identified the need to repair 5,695 transformers, 6,900 kilometers of electricity networks, 242 kilometers of gas networks, and 404 gas distribution facilities.
So far, 441 transformers, 1,134 kilometers of electricity networks, 88 kilometers of gas networks and 92 gas distribution facilities have been repaired. At the same time, energy demand in the covered districts is expected to increase by 49% over the next five years. A corresponding five-year program envisages upgrading 2,261 transformers and 7,449 kilometers of electricity networks in 721 mahallas, as well as 313 gas distribution facilities and 327 kilometers of gas networks in 200 mahallas.
The planned measures are expected to create 1.3 GW of additional transmission capacity and strengthen energy supplies for households and businesses. The program also includes energy-efficiency measures at social facilities. Their implementation is expected to save 4.3 million kWh of electricity and 2.1 million cubic meters of natural gas annually.
To note, the “Yangiyul experience” was introduced in July as a pilot model for improving electricity and natural gas supply at the local level. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed authorities to turn Yangiyul district in Tashkent Region into a model area, with the approach later to be extended nationwide. The model is based on assessing energy demand and infrastructure conditions in each mahalla to identify capacity gaps, prioritize repairs, and plan future investment.
