The week in brief

Two stories dominated the week, and both were about who gets to control something. France's constitutional court struck down the proposed ban on under-15s using social media, ruling that the restriction went further than the constitution allows — six of our outlets carried it, more than any other story. In football, Liverpool's owner FSG sold a 30% stake for £1.65bn to a consortium that includes Jeff Bezos, a deal five outlets covered and that prompted a second wave of explainers about who the new investors actually are. In the United States, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges over the health-insurance executive case, and Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to let his $400m ballroom project proceed. Markets drifted rather than moved: US stocks wobbled on weaker consumer confidence, with Reddit the notable exception at +14%. The week's saddest story came from sport — the 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling died after a crash at the Tour of Portugal. And the most quietly interesting one came from science: astronomers want to use the far side of the moon, permanently shielded from Earth's radio noise, to listen for signals from the early universe.
