Nick Bosa hasn't practiced with the San Francisco 49ers in over three weeks as he continues to rehab his surgically repaired right knee. Bosa required surgery after tearing his ACL just a few weeks into the 2025 season, and despite being cleared for training camp, he's sat out for most of it due to tendinitis and soreness in his knee. But on Tuesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an encouraging update on Bosa's recovery, indicating that he's improving and should return to practice next week.
Hoping he can get into practice next week. We'll see how those three days go after the mandatory three days off," Shanahan said. Brock Purdy is one of the most efficient quarterbacks in football, Christian McCaffrey is still playing at an All-Pro level, George Kittle has returned to practice, and they just brought in future Hall of Famer Mike Evans this past offseason. Defensively, they've got a deep and talented rotation, but Bosa is the biggest difference-maker. He's a five-time Pro Bowler and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 after posting 18.5 sacks, 51 total tackles, and four forced fumbles across 16 games.
He's racked up 55.5 sacks since 2021, sixth most of any player in the NFL, and was well on his way to adding to that total before last season's injury, recording two sacks, two forced fumbles, and 17 total tackles in just the first three games of the season. If Bosa can ramp up his activity over the next week, he has a good chance of suiting up in Week 1, giving the 49ers their best defensive player right as the season kicks off. San Francisco opens the regular season against the Rams on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Melbourne, Australia.
