In "Monday Night Football," the San Francisco 49ers added another win to remain among the NFL's three undefeated teams, with Brock Purdy leading the way. Purdy was instrumental in his team's 23-17 win, completing 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers quarterback finished with a 111.9 passer rating for the game and also achieved some special history with his latest performance.
With his latest outing, Purdy reached the 1,500-pass-attempt minimum necessary to qualify for the NFL's all-time career passer rating leaderboard. He now sits atop that leaderboard with a 105.6 passer rating, ahead of other star quarterbacks, including Lamar Jackson, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes. The Ravens' Jackson is second on the list at a 102.7 passer rating, with Rodgers in third place with a 101.9 passer rating.
The Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow and the Chiefs' Mahomes round out the top five. Rodgers won one with the Green Bay Packers, while Mahomes has captured three championships with the Chiefs.
Purdy and the 49ers have an opportunity to join that Super Bowl company this season. Their 6-0 start has included wins over division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams, as well as the AFC's Denver Broncos. With 11 games remaining, San Francisco remains among the league's three unbeaten teams alongside Kansas City and Minnesota.
Despite his strong performance and historic achievement, Purdy acknowledged second-half mistakes that allowed Jayden Daniels and the Commanders to stay close. "Obviously, offensively and for myself, like, in the second half it’s tough just to do what we did, three-and-outs, and I think there's some plays where I coulda been better for sure. ... For our defense to do what they did, obviously I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true ... for our defense to do what they did at the end, that was really impressive," he told reporters postgame.
The defense came through late in the game, with safety Malik Mustapha breaking up a fourth-down pass attempt by Daniels to receiver Treylon Burks near the goal line. Multiple 49ers later combined for a game-ending sack of Daniels on Washington's final possession. Purdy previously led the NFL in passer rating during the 2023 season and has continued to build an impressive statistical resume.
