49ers Spurned by Veteran WR They Wanted to Trade For

The San Francisco 49ers wanted to trade for a veteran wide receiver, but he would not take their call before the deadline.

The San Francisco 49ers sent a 2027 fourth-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for defensive end DeForest Buckner last week in a bid to help the team make a push for the playoffs in the second half of the season. Buckner was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. San Francisco apparently was ready to reunite with another familiar face, but was turned down by a veteran wide receiver who is content with his situation.

Per Fox's Jay Glazer, the 49ers had a trade ready to go with the Minnesota Vikings for receiver Jauan Jennings, but he opted not to get on a FaceTime call with San Francisco general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. "But it was contingent upon him hopping on a FaceTime with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch and saying, 'Okay, yeah, I want to come back.' "But he didn't.

He said, 'Actually, no, I want to stay here in Minnesota.' Hey, Vikings fans, he likes what you have going on over there." Jennings was a 2020 seventh-round pick by the 49ers. He signed a one-year deal worth up to $13 million with the Vikings in May. Last season, Jennings recorded 55 receptions for 643 yards and nine touchdowns.

His best season came in 2024, when he caught 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns. Jennings has not been a big part of Minnesota's offense this season. He has just four receptions for 43 yards.

Maybe he thinks he'll have a bigger role in the offense in the second half of the season. The Vikings enter Week 8 as the only undefeated team in the league with a 6-0 record. Minnesota will play at the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
