Legendary ESPN broadcaster Mike Breen reported Monday night that LeBron James recently called out Philadelphia 76ers teammate Joel Embiid for arriving to practice "a couple minutes late." James responded to the rumored story on Tuesday and denied the report by writing on social media, "He ain't been late so stop the lies." Sixers head coach Nick Nurse was asked about the situation on Wednesday and said he was "surprised" by the story. Breen is a longtime, well-respected member of the NBA media, so it's hard to believe that he'd fabricate a story like this. James' denial was emphatic though, so it's hard to know what to believe.
Embiid will surely be asked to comment on the rumored controversy in the coming days. Philadelphia's star duo has a combined five regular season MVP awards and 29 All-Star honors and are joined by second-year guard VJ Edgecombe, All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey and former NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown in the starting five. The Sixers acquired Brown in a July trade with the Boston Celtics.
King James made headlines in late September when he departed the team's Training Complex in Camden, New Jersey in a helicopter following practice to fly to New York. James signed with Philadelphia in July and after considering joining the New York Knicks this offseason, will be splitting his time between the City of Brotherly Love and the Big Apple during his upcoming 24th NBA campaign. The 32-year-old Embiid is entering his 11th NBA season (all with the 76ers) and looking to advance past the conference semifinals for the first time in his career.
