The Dark Urge — an origin character afflicted with amnesia and the most intense bloodlust of all time — has some extremely memorable dialogue in Baldur’s Gate 3. At every turn, when you pause to review your response options, you’ll get lines that are funny, chilling, and heartbreaking. Sometimes, that voice belongs to the character (often referred to as, simply, “Durge”).
Sometimes that voice belongs to the game’s narrator, Amelia Tyler, speaking as The Dark Urge’s inner monologue. Tyler noted in a December 2023 interview with TechRadar that her favorite Dark Urge line is just a creepy, demonic laugh. That’s certainly a contender for the most haunting line from this character.
So are the following eight. "…her blood covers you, and its warmth feels like the embrace of an old friend." As The Dark Urge navigates the game’s first act — meeting new companions, assessing the terrain, deciding whether or not to eat hands that pop out of boulder portals — they’re doing so with precious little information. All they have is a name, a tadpole, and a headache.
This, unfortunately, makes the very first bloodthirsty Dark Urge act all the more shattering (especially if you’re attempting to be “good” and fight your darker urges). Early in the game, you meet Alfira, a tiefling bard whose song you help finish in the Emerald Grove. She’ll ask to join the party, and you let her.
Until the sun comes up, that is, and you see what you’ve done. Morning finds her dead, with so many wounds her body is barely recognizable, and you’re reeling, trying to remember what happened. The narrator quickly eulogizes her as “the brave girl who earnestly swore to devote her life to your cause.” Astarion’s helpfully wondering why you’re drenched in blood.
Meanwhile, you’re wondering why her blood feels good. While there’s more gore to come, the surprise of this first scene makes it immediately clear that a Durge run is going to be dark. "Did I play games like this in my youth?
