She and her two co-defendants, unionist Lee Cheuk-yan and lawyer Albert Ho, are the latest to be convicted in the relentless crackdown that followed Hong Kong’s mass pro-democracy protests of 2019 and 2020. Before the U.K.’s 1997 handover of Hong Kong to Beijing, China promised Britain and the people of Hong Kong that existing liberties would be maintained, even extended, under Chinese rule. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and more — all would be buttressed by full democracy of a sort that Britain could never quite manage to allow the people of Hong Kong.
