In honor of the Guardian’s Invertebrate of the Year 2026 award — won by the leaf sheep, which isn’t even a sheep (the charlatan!) but rather a tiny neon green slug that lives underwater — this column is launching its own competition to find the most spineless creature in Europe. The competition is open to all cowardly politicians and also actual invertebrates. Please write entries on a Post-it note and stick them on the bin outside Exki on the Schuman Roundabout.
Of course, calling a political opponent spineless or likening them to a jellyfish is a classic move. British politicians are particularly keen on this method of attack (a sting operation!). Conservative politician Michael Gove in 2024 likened Keir Starmer to a jellyfish, claiming he is “transparent, spineless and swept along by the tide.” He didn’t say whether Starmer also has only one hole used for both eating and expelling waste.
In 2008, David Cameron (who would go on to become the chinos-wearing assassin responsible for Brexit) said he’d seen “more spine in a bunch of jellyfish” than in then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Of course, as any good schoolchild knows, the collective noun for jellyfish isn’t “bunch” but “smack”. Yes, a smack of jellyfish (presumably because they are notorious heroin addicts).
Such a smack has been causing chaos in France this week, with jellyfish causing the partial shutdown of a nuclear reactor. Two of Gravelines nuclear power station’s six units were shut down because jellyfish were found in the seawater filtration system. And, despite not having brains (jellyfish, not the French!), the gelatinous creatures (again, we’re talking jellyfish, not the French) invaded the Gravelines plant on Aug. 11, 2025, and Aug. 11, 2026.
Rumors that these were Russian spy jellyfish sent on a mission to disrupt power flows in France were unconfirmed at the time of going to press. But can’t rule out Vladimir Putin using jellyfish for nefarious purposes. A year ago, he and a Chinese ruler were caught on a hot mic musing about cheating death.
There is a type of jellyfish that has cracked living forever. Turritopsis dohrnii (also known as the immortal jellyfish) can reverse the aging process and revert from adulthood to being juvenile again. It’s believed that the EU is hard at work harnessing the power of these jellyfish so that Maroš Šefčovič can remain a member of the College of Commissioners until the end of time.
