On Thursday, Tokyo Game Show (TGS) — the largest in-person event dedicated to games in Japan — marks its 30th anniversary. It’s a remarkable milestone not only in terms of longevity. In the age of streaming, in-person gaming shows like TGS are no sure thing.
In 2023, the Los Angeles-based Electronic Entertainment Expo (once one of the world’s big three gaming shows alongside Germany’s Gamescom and TGS) announced it was packing up for good, leaving TGS looking like a specimen of an increasingly endangered species. And yet, against all odds, the trade show at Chiba’s Makuhari Messe keeps growing. This year’s 30th anniversary edition expands from four days to five and boasts a record number of exhibitors.
