Sunday’s 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots was one of the worst Pittsburgh Steelers performances in recent memory. Pittsburgh averaged just 3.5 yards per play to New England’s 6.2, and the team had just 235 yards of total offense with two turnovers. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers attempted 39 passes but completed only 23 had just 187 yards passing (he averaged 8.1 yards per completion) with an interception.
The run game was equally as ineffective as Jaylen Warren, Rico Dowdle, and Travis Homer combined for just 81 yards on 20 carries (4.05 yards per carry). Seemingly no one on the offensive side of the ball had an answer for why the Steelers couldn’t move the chains, but Rodgers believes he knows where to start looking. Speaking to reporters after the game, the four-time MVP took a subtle shot at head coach Mike McCarthy and the rest of the Steelers coaching staff for their sub-par play-calling.
Andrew Fillipponi, who covers the Steelers for 93.7 The Fan, also pointed out that Rodgers never directly scapegoated former head coach Mike Tomlin last year, despite there being plenty of opportunities to do so given the team’s struggles. "Says he needs to do a better job of letting the coaches know they’re calling the wrong plays 😂. He didn’t do this one time under Tomlin.”
