Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Heintschel entered Joe Burrow territory on their 59-14 victory over the Miami (OH) Redhawks Saturday. Heintschel, a sophomore from Oregon, Ohio, went 31 of 41 passing for 453 yards and seven touchdowns. Per Pitt football, Heintschel set the ACC record with seven touchdowns.
He became the first FBS quarterback to pass for more than 450 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception since Burrow did so with LSU in 2019. Five other quarterbacks eventually joined Ellis for a share of the record until Heintschel broke it on Saturday, including NFL quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Sam Howell, Sam Hartman and Kenny Pickett. Each of Heintschel's seven touchdown passes went to a different receiver, something the quarterback was happy about. "It's never by design, but I'm glad we were able to share the wealth," Heintschel said, via ESPN.
"At least eight different guys scored, and you can't complain about that." Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi praised Heintschel for his performance, noting that he made great plays and avoided turning the ball over. "He's like a little magician back there," Narduzzi said. "Not only can he throw, but he has a knack to make people miss and get out of trouble." There's a reason Miami reportedly had their eyes on Heintschel before convincing Darian Mensah to transfer to the Hurricanes this offseason.
He threw for 2,354 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2025. Based on his performance on Saturday, he could be in for a special second season with the Panthers. Pitt will next host UCF next Saturday in Week 2.
