The murder trial of former American Idol contestant and Ohio pastor Caleb Flynn entered a dramatic new phase this week as his former mistress, Alleigha Botner, took the witness stand and delivered some of the prosecution's most explosive testimony yet. Flynn, 40, is accused of fatally shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, in their Tipp City, Ohio, home on February 16, 2026 before staging the scene to resemble a burglary. He has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence charges.
Botner's testimony on Wednesday and Thursday has become a focal point of the trial as jurors hear details about the pair's 18-month affair as well as the more than 100,000 text messages exchanged between them. According to her testimony, Flynn repeatedly expressed a desire for his wife to die. Botner told jurors she now believes Flynn killed his wife and said bluntly: "I hate him." The trial has drawn national attention because Flynn appeared on American Idol and later worked as a pastor in Ohio. Prosecutors are arguing that his affair with Botner provided a motive for the killing. Botner's testimony is significant because it offers jurors a firsthand account of Flynn's relationship outside his marriage and also introduces a large volume of communications that prosecutors say demonstrate hostility toward Ashley Flynn and a desire to leave the marriage.
The defense has acknowledged the affair but maintains Flynn wanted a divorce, not his wife's death. Flynn appeared on Season 12 of American Idol in 2013. The Ohio native earned a coveted Golden Ticket and advanced to Hollywood Week but did not make it to the live competition rounds.
At the time, he was working in church ministry and frequently spoke about his faith and his family during the audition process. During his TV appearances, Flynn often spoke about how much he loved his wife and family while pursuing a music career. Ashley Flynn, 37, was found dead from gunshot wounds inside the couple's home in Tipp City on February 16.
According to prosecutors, Ashley was shot while in bed as the couple's two daughters slept elsewhere in the house. Authorities allege Flynn then attempted to stage the scene to look like a home invasion. Flynn initially called 911 and reported that an intruder had broken into the home and shot his wife.
