In his first address to the House of Commons as prime minister, Burnham directly linked the devastating floods in Nepal and China to “the climate crisis” and confirmed that he would go the summit. Burnham is one of the first world leaders to confirm they will head to the summit, with attendance seen as a key indicator of a commitment to climate action.
Expressing his “profound shock and horror” at the Himalayan flash floods, in which more than 1,000 people are now known to have died, Burnham said: “This is what the climate crisis looks like. We have just ourselves experienced what is likely to have been the hottest summer on record.
