The Houston Astros are parting ways with one of their depth outfielders. The Astros have announced that they have designated outfielder Nelson Velazquez for assignment. The American League West club also shared that they called up infielder Raynel Delgado from Triple-A Sugar Land.
The Astros recently claimed Velazquez off of waivers from the St. Yet, with this news, he is now once again available for the taking around the league. Velazquez appeared in three games for the Astros after being claimed off waivers, where he went 0-for-4 at the plate but recorded an RBI.
He also played in 34 games earlier this season with the Cardinals, posting four home runs, 12 RBI, and a .216 batting average. Teams looking for outfield depth could consider taking a chance on Velazquez. He has shown in the past that he can make an impact with his power, so it would not be too surprising if he got claimed by another team.
For example, during the 2023 season, he posted 17 home runs and 34 RBI in just 53 games split between the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals. In 231 career MLB games over four seasons, Velazquez has posted 35 home runs, 100 RBI, and a .211 batting average. It will be interesting to see if he will find a new home after being designated for assignment by the Astros from here.
