The Houston Astros made a major front-office change during a tight playoff race. Dana Brown will not complete his fourth season as Houston's general manager. The Astros announced Monday that they mutually agreed to part ways with Brown, whose contract was expiring at the end of the 2026 season.
Assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff will assume Brown's duties for the rest of the season, in addition to senior advisor and Astros legend Jeff Bagwell. The Astros released statements from Brown and owner Jim Crane on social media. "I want to thank Jim Crane for the opportunity to serve in my first role as an MLB General Manager," Brown said.
"The Astros organization and the fans have welcomed me and my family, and I am grateful to have called Houston home for the past four seasons. I wish the organization well and I look forward to the future as I continue my 36-plus years in professional baseball." "Over the past four seasons, Dana has helped our organization win two division titles and has led our baseball front office through key scouting, draft and development efforts," Crane said. "On behalf of the Astros, I want to thank him for his commitment, energy, and contributions to our organization.
We wish he and his family the best." Brown landed the job months after the Astros won the 2022 World Series. They extended their playoff streak to eight years under Brown, losing a seven-game ALCS to the Texas Rangers in 2023 before getting swept by the Detroit Tigers in 2024. The Astros narrowly missed last year's playoffs with an 87-75 record.
They're down to 65-66 this season after losing six of nine games during an American League West homestand. Houston suffered an 18-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday before dropping consecutive games to the last-place Athletics over the weekend. They squandered a 6-0 lead on Sunday.
Despite those struggles, the Astros remain tied with the Texas Rangers atop the division before going to New York for a six-game road trip against the Yankees and Mets.
