The Athletics have announced that they have claimed outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. The Athletics also shared that they have transferred outfielder Tyler Soderstrom to the 60-day injured list. Rodriguez being claimed by the Athletics comes after the Pirates designated the 26-year-old outfielder for assignment.
Now, with this news, he will be looking to impress and earn a call-up from the Athletics before the season is over. Rodriguez did not make an MLB appearance during this time with the Pirates but did get into some MLB action earlier this season while with the Baltimore Orioles. In seven games with the Orioles earlier this campaign, he posted zero home runs, two RBI, and a .182 batting average.
In 77 Triple-A games this season, Rodriguez has posted six home runs, 34 RBI, and a .287 batting average. Overall, he has had a solid year in Triple-A, so it makes sense that the Athletics are taking a chance on him with this waiver claim. In 51 career MLB games split between the Cleveland Guardians and Orioles, Rodriguez has posted two home runs, 17 RBI, and a .177 batting average.
