Ever since a mysterious diamond-shaped entity rose out of the ground in one of the Avatar: Seven Havens trailers, curious fans have pointed out how much it resembles Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and chaos at the heart of the Avatar franchise’s cosmology. Vaatu and his light counterpart, Raava, look like kites or manta rays with long tendrils, though their bodies constantly shift in fluid ways. Vaatu is primarily black compared to Raava’s white, and the red patterns covering his body perfectly mirror Raava’s blue markings.
That same shade of red — or at least one remarkably similar to it — has emerged throughout Seven Havens in the form of the Anomaly plaguing Ellora. During a massive storm earlier this season, a diamond-shaped spiritual entity rose from the ground amid tendrils of red lightning. It appears to draw power from fear while also instilling overwhelming terror in anyone who gets too close.
Pavi (Saheli Khan) and Nisha (Aishu Devan) are the only apparent exceptions: Rather than transform them into violent, fearful Afflicted, their encounters with the Anomaly unlock fragments of the twins’ buried memories. So, is the Anomaly meant to evoke Vaatu? When Polygon put that question directly to Seven Havens executive producers Sehaj Sethi and Ethan Spaulding at New York Comic Con 2026, neither was willing to dismiss the theory outright.
Spaulding quickly echoed that response. That’s obviously not confirmation that the Anomaly is Vaatu. But it’s a conspicuous non-denial, especially because The Legend of Korra left behind a very specific explanation for how the spirit of darkness could return.
During The Legend of Korra Book 2, Korra’s uncle Unalaq freed Vaatu from the Tree of Time and fused with him during Harmonic Convergence, creating a Dark Avatar commonly called Unavaatu. Unavaatu then tore Raava out of Korra and seemingly destroyed her, severing Korra’s connection to Aang and every Avatar who came before him. But Raava and Vaatu cannot permanently destroy one another.
Each contains the seed of the other, which will eventually grow whenever its counterpart is destroyed. The 10,000-year cycle of the Harmonic Convergence is intrinsically connected to their resurrection and renewed conflict. During the final fight between a massive Unavaatu and an equally gargantuan astral projection of Korra, she discovered a small remnant of Raava already regenerating inside Vaatu.
