Nara Organics, the company behind a recent baby formula recall in the United States, will bring the product back to American parents now that it has ended its relationship with American dairy. Nearly 80 percent of parents use baby formula at some point in their baby's life, and nearly 1 in 5 babies will drink formula within their first few days. Babies are particularly susceptible to foodborne illnesses because of their weakened immune systems, which makes sterilization and preventing the risk of contamination particularly important.
Nara Organics announced in June that it was pulling all Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula from shelves because it could be contaminated with botulism. The company told parents to stop using the formula immediately and advised parents to monitor their children for symptoms of botulism and seek medical attention if necessary. Four kids became sick and had to be hospitalized for botulism during the multistate outbreak, but now that the outbreak is over, Nara Organics is planning on bringing the product back to American parents.
Nara Organics announced on August 27 that it plans to return its infant formula to the market using a fully European Union-based dairy supply chain and enhanced testing protocols. The decision came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded their investigation.
Newsweek reached out to Nara Organics via email for comment. The FDA declared the outbreak over after investigating cases in three states: Pennsylvania, California and Washington. Clinical samples from an infant in the outbreak matched a clinical sample from an infant who became ill in the 2025 ByHeart outbreak, leading investigators to determine the commonality was the milk supplied by Organic West Milk and sprayed by Dairy Farmers of America.
"Currently there is not enough evidence to determine if milk was contaminated before drying or during the drying process, and FDA’s root cause investigation is ongoing," the FDA said in a statement. Nara Organics said in a statement that future products will use European dairy suppliers and will be subject to rigorous Clostridium botulinum testing protocols. Products were previously sold at Target stores and online.
"Our hearts are with these families, and all Nara families who experienced this recall," the company said in a statement. "We’re grateful to learn that the outbreak is over. As parents ourselves, we’re devastated that the families who fed Nara had to worry about their babies.
