Duncan Sheik, the Grammy- and Tony Award-winning singer-songwriter best known for his 1996 hit “Barely Breathing,” has died at the age of 56. Sheik died Thursday, September 17, in Manhattan, according to reports. He is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their seven-year-old daughter, Ines.
Sheik and Ariffin began dating in 2011 and welcomed Ines in December 2018. While Sheik was a familiar figure on the stage and in the music world, he largely kept his family life away from the spotlight. His family had released a statement before his death asking for privacy while he received medical care.
His representative later said that Sheik died surrounded by love. His family also expressed gratitude for the support from fans, friends and fellow artists following his death. Sheik was born in Montclair, New Jersey, and raised in South Carolina by his mother, Suzanne Sheik.
His sister, Kacie Sheik, is also an actress who has appeared on Broadway. His grandmother encouraged his early love of music, helping nurture the talent that would eventually lead him to an acclaimed career as both a recording artist and composer.
