Case Keenum just led the Chicago Bears to a dramatic 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on "Monday Night Football." The result may say more about the state of the Eagles right now, but it was a commanding win nonetheless and a clean game from Keenum, a 38-year-old quarterback who hadn't played a regular-season game since December 2023. But apparently, it still might not be enough to guarantee him the starting job Week 4 against the New York Jets. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Friday that while Bears head coach Ben Johnson still hasn't named a starter, Tyson Bagent has received the first-team reps this week over Keenum.
This doesn't necessarily guarantee Bagent will start, but it strongly suggests that. Philadelphia seems to be trending in the wrong direction, but there's no denying that it was an impressive showing for the veteran QB.
Bagent, meanwhile, is the younger, more mobile option, but he had only just cleared concussion protocol before the Eagles game and missed most of last week's practices. He's fully healthy now, and it would make sense for the Bears to roll with him, especially since Bagent was listed as Caleb Williams' backup to start the season. But it's also hard not to stay with Keenum after what we just saw.
When Williams first went down with the hamstring injury in the Vikings' loss, Bagent stepped in and went 5 of 9 for 54 yards with zero touchdowns. Those aren't convincing numbers, but he's had success before in his time with the Bears, and the team signed him to a two-year, $10 million extension last year for a reason. Ben Johnson seemingly always has a plan, and if it's Bagent who's made the starter, it'll probably work out.
