The No. 21 Iowa Hawkeyes are in contention to make the College Football Playoff with a 6-2 record, but head coach Kirk Ferentz isn't expecting favorable rankings from the committee when they release their first rankings on Tuesday night. The Hawkeyes started the season 4-0, but suffered a blowout loss to Ohio State on Oct. 3 and a 13-10 loss to Minnesota on Oct. 24. Iowa made a statement on Saturday, beating then-No. 25 Wisconsin 30-0 at home.
When speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Ferentz was asked if he'd pay attention to the CFP rankings on Tuesday night. He further suggested that the committee might be more apt to rank ESPN's conference partners (SEC, ACC, Big 12) higher than Iowa, a Big Ten program.
"So, not to make fun of it, but it's great for TV, right," Ferentz said, via the Hawkeyes' website. "It's going to be televised? Next time I look at my iPad, I'm sure I'll be reading all about it and can't wait.
I did notice they seem to promote the sports that they carry. "You couldn't find anything on the Baseball World Series until the last game. I'm living in the same world, right?
I’m like, are they still playing the World Series or what? Oh, yeah, FOX, ESPN -- I got it, okay. I better watch out because I'm pro-FOX, right?
We're a FOX conference and several others, but we're not ESPN, so we probably won't make the rankings." Given Iowa's ranking in the AP poll, it's unlikely the Hawkeyes will be one of the 12 teams in the initial bracket. But if they win out, they could earn an at-large bid at the committee's discretion.
