North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick is in Ireland preparing for his team's 2026 season opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. When speaking to reporters on Thursday, Belichick was asked if he's given any thought to a potential return to the NFL coaching ranks. "I'm focused on UNC right now absolutely.
I've recruited these kids, two years with them, been with these guys. I want to help them," Belichick replied, via Brian Murphy of WRAL. "I had a great experience in the NFL, but I'm very happy at North Carolina.
Excited about the future of our program." Belichick is the third-winningest head coach in NFL history, trailing only Don Shula and George Halas. He has eight total Super Bowl titles: two as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants and six as head coach of the New England Patriots' dynastic run. Belichick took over as the Tar Heels' program leader prior to the 2025 season, notching a 4-8 record in his first year.
The 74-year-old coaching icon will look to mount serious improvements in Year 2. North Carolina will kickoff against TCU at noon ET on Saturday.
