Bill Maher mocks Trump’s bizarre convention pledge of allegiance

Comedian Bill Maher mocked President Donald Trump’s bizarre version of the Pledge of Allegiance, which he had supporters recite during the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Thursday. The host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher appeared stunned by the moment during his Friday night monologue. I'll do it anyway — I don't care if I'm registered or not.

I'm going to try and cheat like hell, like they do,” Maher said. After finishing the passage, the host threw his hands in the air and said: “I got nothing anymore.” Trump followed up the pledge Thursday night — the final evening of the first-of-its-kind convention — with a warning to supporters. You go to hell, you know that?

In 2013, responding to Trump’s repeated false claim that Barack Obama was born outside the United States, Maher joked that Trump was the “spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan.” Trump later sued Maher over the remark. More recently, Maher has accused Trump of embracing socialism through his interventions in private businesses; denounced him as an “emperor” staging “gladiatorial games,” a reference to the UFC event at the White House; and described Trump’s followers as part of a “cult.” Trump, for his part, has repeatedly attacked Maher, calling him “highly overrated” and accusing him of having “a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The two had dinner at the White House in March 2025, after which Maher said the president had been “gracious and measured” and far different from the “crazy” man he sees on television. Yet, the public insults continued afterward.
