The permanently weary Detroit underground rap fixture Boldy James makes so much music, and it's all worth hearing, but the neverending deluge can be hard to track. Earlier this year, we posted Manhunt, the collaborative record that Boldy made with New York rapper Rome Streetz. Since then, Boldy has released three new albums — Hook, Line & Sinker with Your Boy Posca, Trapper's Alley 3: Hell Or High Water with Nicholas Craven, and 1LB with Your Boy Posca again — and we didn't post any of them.
Apologies to everyone, I guess especially Your Boy Posca. But we will not miss Boldy's newest record with Real Bad Man. LA producer and label head Real Bad Man has teamed with Boldy James for past collaborative albums like 2020's Real Bad Boldy, 2022's Killing Nothing, and last year's Conversational Pieces.
He has also made albums with people like Zelooperz and Kool Keith. Today, Boldy James and Real Bad Man once again join forces on the new album Strobelight. If you have heard any of their previous tracks, you know precisely the combination of clean, sample-heavy boom-bap and hard muttering that you will find here.
I'm on my first listen right now, and it sounds good. Wiki, El Cousteau, Grip, and Taj make guest appearances.
