Dinosaur fans are in luck because two prehistoric films, “The End of Oak Street” and “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” are hitting theaters this weekend, but they’ll be no match for reigning box office champion “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Warner Bros.’ “The End of Oak Street,” starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as suburbanites magically transported back to prehistoric times, made $2.5 million in previews at the box office. Out of the new releases this weekend, it’s expected to come out on top with $20 million to $30 million, with Warner Bros. projecting $18 million to $23 million domestically and $20 million to $25 million internationally. With a budget above $80 million, it’ll need to ride its positive reviews and word-of-mouth to become profitable in the dog days of summer.
However, Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will still conquer the box office charts for the third week in a row. It’s estimated to bring in $65 million to $70 million this weekend, a roughly 55% decline. It’s on track to soon cross $2 billion worldwide, and after just 12 days on screens it became the year’s highest-grossing movie with $1.68 billion globally.
That’s a similar opening to the family-friendly show’s last film spinoff, 2023’s “The Mighty Movie,” which made $22 million and climbed to $205 million globally against a $30 million budget. Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” is aiming to add $17 million to $20 million in its fifth weekend, and a trio of new releases, “The Wrong Girls,” “The Rivals of Amziah King” and “The Brink of War,” are looking at single-digit openings.
