Flavio Bolsonaro pulled even with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a new poll as the right-wing senator seizes on turmoil at Brazil’s Supreme Court to rally conservative voters. Bolsonaro and Lula would each receive 41% of the vote in a runoff election next month, according to a Quaest survey published Monday. A week earlier, the pollster had Lula ahead by 1 percentage point.
Bolsonaro, 44, had been gaining momentum as corruption allegations involving one of Lula’s sons and a weakening economy weighed on the leftist president’s reelection bid. Now, a deepening crisis at the Supreme Court has handed him another potent rallying cry: the fate of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw the case that sent former President Jair Bolsonaro to prison for attempting a coup.
