Britain has defended its decision to release on bail five men arrested over an incident near RAF Fairford, after US President Donald Trump questioned why they were not kept in custody. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the suspects were subject to the “strictest possible bail conditions” and insisted British authorities had the investigation under close control. The five UK nationals, aged between 23 and 25, were arrested early Sunday after police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the Gloucestershire airbase.
Police said searches of the vans found a quantity of petrol but no explosive devices. Burnham also said the British government had “strong indications” that Iran played a part in the incident, without giving details of the evidence behind that assessment. The allegation has been rejected by Iran, whose embassy in London said it “categorically rejects” claims linking Tehran to the incident.
