The Denver Broncos lost just three games during the 2025 regular season, but the team is already two-thirds of the way to its loss total through the first four games this season. Part of the blame for Denver’s turbulent start is because of the offensive struggles. The Broncos rank 27th in total offense (280.3 yards per game) and scoring (18.5 points per game).
They’re averaging 62 fewer yards and five fewer points per game this year than last. Some believe the significant dropoff has to do with offensive coordinator Davis Webb calling the plays instead of head coach Sean Payton. Webb was a hot commodity during the last coaching cycle, and Payton made the decision to give him play-calling duties so as not to lose him to another team.
But that decision has seemingly backfired, and now fans are calling for Payton to take back the play-calling duties to help salvage the season. They may soon get their wish as Payton is reportedly mulling over the play-calling situation, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. "Taking it off head coaches for a while, a lot of people around the league seem to think Broncos coach Sean Payton won't wait too much longer to take play-calling back from Davis Webb, though I have to believe it won't be an impulse decision if it happens,” Fowler said.
"In Denver, complicating matters is that its head coach happens to be one of the best playcallers of his generation — that, and Bo Nix is not playing well. My sense is Webb will have more time, but at some point the product needs to match the expectations." With Payton calling the plays last season, Denver ranked 14th in total offense (342.6 yards per game), 11th in passing offense (223.9 yards per game), 16th in rushing offense (118.7 yards per game), and 14th in scoring (23.6 points per game). Quarterback Bo Nix has also regressed this year.
He averaged 231.2 yards passing per game last year, and his production has dropped to 204.7 yards per game this year. Denver’s offense has also scored more than 20 points just once this year.
