But the decision sparked intense backlash, not just because Watson hasn't played NFL football in nearly two years, but because he openly criticized Browns fans for booing him during a preseason game.
Then the team proceeded to make him the starting quarterback. But Monken apparently wasn't done there. Monday morning, he announced who the captains will be for Week 1, and guess who made the list: Watson.

But fans quickly keyed in on the decision to make Watson a captain specifically. "They just shoving Watson down our throats when no one wants him," one user wrote.
"They named this man the CAPTAIN 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️😂🤨 Wow! Cleveland y'all deserve better," another replied. "Todd [Monken] might be as clueless as Kevin [Stefanski] was.
Why in the hell is Deshaun a captain?" one other fan commented. "What a joke, you pick Watson. He knew the players would never pick him.
"Doubling down on Deshaun is so Cleveland," another replied. The Browns are like a clown on fire; kind of funny, kind of sad. 🤡🔥 Can't wait to see if they'll put a "C" on his chest too. You truly can't make this stuff up," one other commented.
