The Cleveland Browns had a quarterback competition on their hands until they named Deshaun Watson the starter on Monday. Shedeur Sanders is clearly Cleveland’s QB2, leaving Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green to battle for the third-string spot. It’s unlikely the Browns will carry four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, which leads some to believe they’ll cut at least one signal-caller before the start of the regular season.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport is convinced Gabriel will be that player. With rookie Taylen Green also on the roster, it's a numbers game—one Gabriel is losing. But it is becoming increasingly apparent that his next opportunity will come elsewhere.” Gabriel hasn’t had the best showing through two preseason games, completing 5 of 9 passes for 23 yards and an interception.
Few would’ve guessed that a preseason roster cut would be in Gabriel’s future after he was named Cleveland’s start last season after just four games. However, the Browns offense stagnated when he was under center. Gabriel threw for 937 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions, but he was just 1-5 as the starter and was benched in favor of Sanders down the stretch.
Given the number of QB-needy teams, it’s unlikely Gabriel would be unemployed for long. Several teams including the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, and Washington Commanders could consider Gabriel, a former third-round pick, as a backup.
