The Boston Bruins are keeping one of their young centers around for a long time. The Bruins have announced that they have signed center Fraser Minten to a seven-year, $50.4 million contract extension. Starting during the 2027-28 season, Minten will carry a $7.2 million cap hit.
Minten landing this big extension from the Bruins comes after he had a breakout year for the Original Six club this past season. In 82 games with the Bruins last season, he set career highs with 17 goals, 18 assists, 35 points, 142 hits, and a plus-21 rating. With numbers like these, he gave the Bruins a nice mixture of solid secondary scoring and grit.
Given how well Minten played last season for the Bruins, it makes sense that they have worked quickly to sign him to a contract extension. Yet, at the same time, this is a bit of a bold move for the Bruins. A $7.2 million cap hit is certainly far from cheap, and they will be expecting the Vancouver, British Columbia native to continue to improve during his extension.
The potential for Minten to emerge as a top-six NHL center is there, and the Bruins have made it abundantly clear that they believe in him after giving him this deal. It will be interesting to see how this contract extension ages for Boston.
