As expected, Baker Mayfield will be unavailable for Thursday night's primetime matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb injury during a Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The veteran signal caller was sidelined for the Buccaneers' Week 4 loss to the Green Bay Packers, where undrafted rookie QB Jalon Daniels stepped up as the team's starter.
Mayfield is expected to miss somewhere between 3-6 weeks with this injury to his right thumb. His return to the field hinges on whether or not he can grip the football with his throwing hand. The Buccaneers officially ruled Mayfield out on Wednesday, in addition to starting safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (ribs).
In his first career NFL start, Daniels completed 19 of his 27 pass attempts for 148 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions. The former Kansas Jayhawks QB also rushed for an additional 55 yards on the ground in the 17-14 loss to the Packers. The Buccaneers are 0-4 to open up the 2026 NFL season.
Now on a short week following Sunday's loss to the Packers, they face off against a hot Cowboys offense that just notched a 34-30 win over the Houston Texans in Week 4. Thursday's game will kick off at 8:15 p.m.
