The Tampa Bay Buccaneers furthered their commitment to starting quarterback Baker Mayfield on Tuesday, agreeing to a three-year contract extension that prevents him from entering free agency after the upcoming 2026 NFL season. Mayfield ended contract discussions with the Buccaneers at the beginning of training camp, but the two sides reopened talks and reached an agreement just days before the start of their regular-season campaign. Mayfield initially signed with the Buccaneers on a one-year, $4 million deal before the 2023 season.
In 2024, he signed a three-year, $100 million extension that locked him in through this upcoming season. Now, his contract runs through 2029. Mayfield's latest contract is worth $165 million, putting his annual earnings at $55 million per season.
Both Mayfield and the Buccaneers expressed their mutual desire to get a deal done earlier this offseason. Mayfield called Tampa Bay "home" and general manager Jason Licht said the goal is to retain him as the team's franchise quarterback for "a long time." "I love Baker. I love everything he's done for us," Licht said in July.
"The goal for us is for Baker to continue to be the player that he is, and at some point, we reach an extension when the time is right and he continues to be our quarterback for a long time. That's the goal." The Buccaneers will open up their 2026 season with a Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
