What will the Chicago Bulls do about Nick Richards?

The Chicago Bulls have a decision to make with Nick Richards, and it could come down to how much they value having a reliable big man behind their projected starter. Chicago acquired Richards from the Phoenix Suns before the trade deadline after finding itself in desperate need of a center who could handle starting duties. He didn't come with superstar expectations, but he gave the Bulls something they needed: size, physicality and a willingness to do the dirty work.

In 20 games with Chicago, Richards averaged 9.4 points and 7.6 rebounds. His game, for sure, is straightforward. He's an old-school big who isn't afraid to throw his weight around, battle for rebounds and make his presence felt around the basket.

That could still have value for the Bulls with their new lineup. Richards can do the latter, which gives Chicago some real flexibility.

Richards also offers something Chicago might not want to lose simply by moving on from him. He has already spent time with the team and knows the roster and expectations, while his physical style gives the Bulls a different look depending on the matchup. Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report included Richards among the NBA free agents worth watching, making his situation one to keep an eye on as Chicago continues shaping its roster.

If a Nicolas Claxton takes over the starting job, Richards could still have a big role behind him. For a team trying to build a deeper roster, keeping a capable backup who can handle starting minutes is a good thing.
