The Indiana Fever suffered another early-round playoff exit this week when the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces beat them in a best-of-three first round series. Whenever a team doesn't deliver on winning a WNBA title, there's going to be evaluation of the team and coaching staff. So, Indiana head coach Stephanie White is under fire this week as the Fever review their 2026 season.
During her exit interview on Thursday, star Caitlin Clark was asked about White's future with the Fever. Clark didn't give her explicit opinion on what should happen to her coach, but she talked positively about her. "I really appreciate Steph," Clark said.
"I like to say, the best job in women's basketball and possibly women's sports, getting to lead this franchise that has so much notoriety. But at the same time, it can come with some negatives, and people are going to criticize everything that you do, and that's just reality, and people expect greatness. Personally, my relationship with Steph, she's somebody that's always supported me, and it's been really fun getting to play for her." Clark's always advocated for her head coach ever since she was hired ahead of the 2025 season.
Obviously, it probably still hurts that the Fever's hopes of making it to the finals are over. But, it sounds like Clark would want to run it back with White again next season. It would be shocking if the Fever organization gave up on White after just two seasons, especially since the team made the playoffs both years.
But, crazier things have happened. For instance, the New York Liberty fired coach Sandy Brondello last September after a first round playoff exit despite the fact that the Liberty won their first WNBA championship under her just a year prior. No coach's job is ever truly 100% safe.
