The Chicago Bears absolutely lit up the Carolina Panthers' defense in Week 1, coming out on top with a 59-37 final score in Charlotte. After the game, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams met on the field at Bank of America Stadium for a handshake with Panthers head coach Dave Canales. Williams delivered a message to Canales that drew some serious attention on social media.
"Y'all are a great defense, man," Williams said. Williams finished the game with 269 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 65 rushing yards and two rushing scores. The Bears' running backs, D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, combined for 224 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Canales was asked about this comment from Williams when speaking to reporters postgame. The Carolina HC didn't take the message as a jab. The Bears lost one fumble and recorded 12 penalties in their Week 1 victory over the Panthers, leaving Williams dissatisfied.
"We obviously have to be better. We've got to protect the football. We can't have the penalties that we had," Williams said postgame.
"We're going to go back, and like I said, look at those, be truthers about ourselves and what we can be better at and find a way to try to go 1-0 this next week."
