The Montreal Canadiens lost to the Nashville Predators by a 5-2 final score in their most recent game on Thursday night. Now, the Canadiens have surprisingly traded away one of their promising defenseman to the Predators just one day after the contest. The Canadiens have announced that they have traded defenseman Jayden Struble to the Predators in exchange for the Vegas Golden Knights' 2027 second-round pick.
The timing of this trade is a little surprising, as it is still the beginning of the season. While this is the case, the Canadiens have decided to move on from Struble. Questions about Struble's future with the Canadiens have come up in the past due to their strong defensive depth.
It seemed possible that the Canadiens would eventually move out one of their left-shot defensemen, and now they have done just that with Struble. Struble should now be a key part of the Predators' defensive group. It is no secret that they needed help on their blueline, so them taking a gamble on a young defenseman like Struble is understandable.
Struble was selected by the Canadiens in the second round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, 46th overall. In 174 games over four seasons with Montreal, he posted seven goals, 35 points, 167 penalty minutes, and 364 hits. It will now be interesting to see how much of an impact he can make in Nashville from here.
