Cardbox Packaging has brought in the upgraded MK Duopress Power press at its Wolfsberg plant in Austria, seeking to ease die-cutting bottlenecks and improve postpress output. The machine comes from the collaboration between printing press manufacturer HEIDELBERG and printing equipment company MK Masterwork. The press integrates hot foil stamping and die-cutting together into one line.

It separates individual panels and cuts them from the sheet via two die-cutting stations placed one after the other. According to Heidelberg, the setup can run at up to 7,000 sheets an hour, depending on the substrate, while maintaining stability and precision through the process. The system is intended for packaging work in sectors, including cosmetics, luxury food products, confectionery and spirits.

Cardbox Packaging was among the pilot users of the updated model. The investment was linked to its long-running relationship with Heidelberg and to the service support provided. Cardbox Packaging Holding managing director Roland Schöberl said: "We value the open and solution-oriented dialogue we have with Heidelberg.

This enables us time and again to master the challenges we face as a packaging printer and to resolve them in the best interests of our customers." Across five sites in Europe and the US, Cardbox uses technology and technical support from Heidelberg and MK Masterwork for most of its postpress work. At Cardbox, restricted die-cutting capacity had been limiting production. According to Heidelberg, the MK Duopress Power removed that constraint and expanded its hot foil stamping capability.

The Wolfsberg site already runs two Speedmaster XL 106 presses for folding carton work. One of them operates at 21,000 sheets an hour and is used alongside three MK Mastermatrix 106 CSB die-cutters. At Cardbox's US site, a Speedmaster XL 106 is installed with an MK Promatrix 106 CSB die-cutter and an MK Diany Easy folding carton gluer.

A further MK Promatrix 106 CB is due to be installed there to raise die-cutting capacity. Heidelberg said it is continuing to bring MK Masterwork finishing equipment, including the MK Duopress Power, into the Prinect workflow. Heidelberg chief sales officer David Schmedding said: "Today's customers don't expect individual machines, but rather integrated production solutions.
