Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold, the Cardinals have signed pitcher Josh Fleming to a minor league contract. Fleming appeared in one major league game this season with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he allowed four earned runs on six hits in three innings pitched. Following this, he was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays and later signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs.
He was then released from his minor league deal with Chicago earlier this week. In 18 Triple-A appearances this season, Fleming has posted a 4-6 record, a 3.16 ERA, and 64 strikeouts. With numbers like these, he has been pretty solid in Triple-A, so it makes sense that the Cardinals are taking a gamble on him with his minor league contract.
Fleming will also provide the Cardinals with another pitcher who has some MLB experience in their depth. In 81 career MLB games split between the Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Blue Jays, Fleming has posted a 20-14 record, two saves, a 4.86 ERA, and 162 strikeouts. It will now be interesting to see if Fleming can impress during his minor league deal and have his contract selected by the Cardinals before the end of the season.
