The Los Angeles Chargers haven’t quite figured out the right dance partner for quarterback Justin Herbert. Ladd McConkey has been tremendous at his top target. Quentin Johnston has made great strides year-over-year.
Oronde Gadsden, David Njoku, and Charlie Kolar should be quite the trio at tight end. Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater are back as the bookend tackles, which should help improve the protection of the seventh-year signal-caller. It’s not about who he’s working with on the field, though.
Age: 432022-2025: Miami Dolphins (Head Coach)2017-2021: San Francisco 49ers (Run Game Coordinator, Offensive Coordinator)2015-2016: Atlanta Falcons (Offensive Assistant) Herbert has worked with four different offensive coordinators since arriving to Los Angeles in 2020: Shane Steichen, Joe Lombardi, Kellen Moore, and Greg Roman. Steichen and Moore are the names you will remember for positive reasons, with both men producing top-eight passing attacks during their stints. The Philadelphia Eagles ultimately ended up as the next landing spot for each of them, with the former choosing that path before being named head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and the latter landing on his feet with the organization before parlaying his success into the same title for the New Orleans Saints.
Lombardi and Roman are remembered less favorably, with many believing their offenses led to regression for Herbert. McDaniel will be tasked with not only improving the overall efficiency of the offense, but helping the veteran quarterback finally break through – with the ultimate goal being that they can finally advance in the postseason together It’s easier said than done, though, isn’t it? McDaniel has worked miracles in the past – turning Tua Tagovailoa into one of the league’s most prolific passers during their time together with the Miami Dolphins, while winning multiple playoff games together with Jimmy Garoppolo as members of the San Francisco 49ers.
Herbert is not only more talented, but more established within the franchise than either one of those guys were when they had so much success.
