Chargers OC Mike McDaniel Responds to Questions About His Job Security

Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel responded to questions about his job security after an 0-4 start.

The Los Angeles Chargers are 0-4 to begin the 2026 NFL season, dropping losses to the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks. The Chargers entered this year's campaign with quite a bit of optimism, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The organization hired former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as the team's new offensive coordinator this past offseason, with hopes that he could maximize the talent of quarterback Justin Herbert.

But now four games in the year, the Chargers rank near the bottom of the league in total yards per game (306.8) and points per game (16.8). Herbert threw for 189 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's loss to the Seahawks. Running back Omarion Hampton led the team in rushing with just 45 yards in the 30-23 loss.

When speaking to reporters on Thursday, McDaniel responded to questions about his job security. "When you have high expectations and you're getting the results we're getting, and you're 0-4, that's pretty standard operating procedure as I've seen in the National Football League, in my experience," McDaniel said. "Everybody wants the Chargers to do better.

I would be foolish or I’d feel entitled if I didn’t expect there to be disappointment that comes with the territory of the job. "I don’t expect to get praised through failure.” McDaniel needs to get something going if he wants to start warding off some of these questions about his position on Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff. The Chargers will face off against the Denver Broncos in a Week 5 matchup this coming Sunday.
