Andy Reid wouldn't commit to when Patrick Mahomes will return to action. Mahomes has practiced with the Kansas City Chiefs in training camp, but the star quarterback hasn't played in either of their two preseason games. It remains unclear whether he'll play in their season opener against the Denver Broncos.
Reid didn't offer any indications about Kansas City's Week 1 plans for Mahomes on Monday. "He’s doing great," Reid said per the Kansas City Star's Pete Sweeney. I’m literally taking it day by day.
There are no predictions here on anything. But if the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can, then we'll address that when we get there." Mahomes hasn't played since tearing his ACL in a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last December. The injury ended a disappointing season in which he recorded his worst quarterback rating (89.6) since taking over the starting job in 2018.
The three-time Super Bowl champion said during an in-game interview that he "really wanted to play" in Saturday's preseason contest, but he didn't get the green light. Mahomes is feeling "great" and "extremely confident" that he'll be ready to play on Sept. 14 if cleared. "At the end of the day it’s up to Coach Reid, and I have to trust that he’s going to do right by me," Mahomes said on the KSHB 41 broadcast, via KSHB's Tod Palmer.
"Like I said, I prepared like I was going to play this game. Obviously, I didn’t get to play, but I’ll prepare next week. We’ll see if I get to play then.
If not, I’m going to be ready to go for that first game of the year, God willing."
