The New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez have still yet to come to terms on a long-term contract extension. When asked about the situation after practice on Tuesday, Gonzalez admitted that he's frustrated by the inability to get a deal done. "It's frustrating, but I'm focused on the season.
I'm focused on here now," Gonzalez said, via team insider Mike Reiss of ESPN. "I'm focused on Week 1 at this point. I mean, it's been all offseason, so I feel like the line of today is, 'It is what it is,'" he added.
Earlier this year, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the team offered Gonzalez a deal that would have made him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. On Tuesday, New England's executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said that same deal is still on the table. He's an elite player," Wolf said, via Reiss.
"I've been on record saying that before, and we're continuing to work with his representation to find a resolution that works for everyone." The Patriots will open up their regular-season schedule with a Week 1 Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 9.
