Citi sees improving momentum across the industrial sector after organic growth reached 6.9% in the second quarter of 2026, substantially exceeding the bank's 4.0% forecast. Strong data centre investment remains an important source of demand, while signs of a broader short-cycle recovery suggest growth is beginning to extend into more areas of the industrial economy. Industrial-sector organic growth reached 6.9% during the second quarter, comfortably ahead of Citi's forecast of 4.0%.

The stronger performance indicates that demand has remained resilient while becoming increasingly broad-based across different industrial markets. Citi sees the results as evidence that the sector's expansion is no longer dependent on only a narrow group of high-growth end markets. Improving activity across shorter-cycle businesses could provide an additional source of momentum if the recovery continues during the remainder of 2026.

Investment associated with data centres continues to play an important role in industrial-sector growth. Rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure has increased demand for electrical equipment, cooling systems, power management technology and other industrial products required to construct and operate large-scale computing facilities. Citi also sees potential for this investment cycle to produce spillover benefits across the wider industrial economy.

As data centre development drives additional electricity generation, transmission and supporting infrastructure requirements, companies outside the immediate AI supply chain could benefit from related capital spending. Citi highlighted increasing evidence that a short-cycle industrial recovery is developing. Short-cycle markets generally respond relatively quickly to changes in economic activity, inventories and customer demand.

Improvement in these areas could indicate that industrial momentum is broadening beyond longer-term infrastructure projects and data centre spending. A sustained recovery would potentially strengthen order books and provide greater visibility for industrial companies heading into 2027. Profitability also came in slightly ahead of Citi's expectations.

Average operating margins across the sector reached 21.4%, compared with the bank's forecast of 21.2%. Citi views operating margins above 20% as evidence of healthy underlying profitability. Further revenue growth could create additional operating leverage, while pricing strategies may allow companies to protect or potentially expand margins even as costs fluctuate.
