In a Sunday full of crushing injuries across the NFL, none perhaps were as difficult to watch as Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' dislocated left elbow. Daniels was carted off the field at halftime of the Commanders' Week 2 loss versus the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday after going down on the final play of the second quarter. Veteran signal-caller Marcus Mariota replaced his teammate and Washington head coach Dan Quinn said Monday that the 32-year-old is lined up to start the team's Week 3 contest against the Seattle Seahawks.
Quinn added that there likely wouldn't be any significant update on Daniels' status until Thursday or Friday. Mariota went 11-for-16 with 111 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions during the 37-20 defeat and has plenty of experience filling in for injured starters, including last season when Daniels was limited to seven games due to numerous ailments. Among the slew of big names that Mariota has backed up in the past include Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans), Derek Carr (Las Vegas Raiders) and Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles).
The 2015 second overall draft pick finished last season with a 61.2% completion percentage for 1,695 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 50 rushing attempts for 297 yards and one touchdown across 11 games (eight starts). Mariota has recorded a 62.8% completion percentage, 17,990 passing yards, 108 touchdowns and 62 interceptions in 105 career regular season games (82 starts) and registered 2,456 rushing yards and 19 scores on 426 carries. The Commanders are 0-2 and will host the defending Super Bowl champions on Sunday afternoon.
