Cooper & Oxley, a construction group based in Western Australia (WA), has been selected to carry out the initial works for the Bentley Health Service Surgicentre, a major health infrastructure project valued at A$167m ($118m). The announcement comes as part of ongoing investment by both the state and federal governments to increase regional healthcare services. The new facility aims to expand elective surgery capacity in Perth's south-eastern corridor.
Work on the site is expected to begin shortly. The forward works contract comprises the provision of more than 300 visitor and staff parking bays, installation of in-ground services, and earthworks to prepare the location for the main construction phase. The purpose-built surgicentre is scheduled for construction starting this year, with completion targeted for 2028.
Designed by Silver Thomas Hanley Architecture, the new centre will include six operating theatres, a 24-bed surgical ward, two dedicated procedure rooms, 15 discharge lounge spaces, a day-stay unit with 42 patient bays, and a central sterilisation services department. These facilities are intended to support more efficient delivery of elective surgery and to provide additional capacity across various specialities. The Bentley Health Service Surgicentre is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.
Upon completion, the centre is expected to separate planned surgical procedures from emergency care, which will help improve patient flow and ease pressure on other nearby hospitals. WA Health Minister Meredith Hammat said: "The Bentley Health Service Surgicentre will help more Western Australians access planned surgery sooner, with six new operating theatres, dedicated procedures rooms, and additional surgical beds. "By separating more planned procedures form emergency care, we're helping improve patient flow and reduce pressure across the wider hospital system." The surgicentre forms part of the Cook Labor Government's broader A$5.5bn programme to upgrade health infrastructure in the state.
The facility aims to enable faster access to elective surgery and to provide contemporary healthcare services for a growing local population. WA health infrastructure minister John Carey said: "The Bentley Health Service Surgicentre will deliver more operating theatres, more surgical beds, and greater elective surgery capacity for Western Australians. "This project is about building infrastructure that delivers real benefits for patients, healthcare staff, and the wider community, while supporting jobs and economic activity during construction." "Cooper & Oxley wins contract for $118m Bentley Health Service Surgicentre" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
