Country star Kacey Musgraves is facing a wave of conservative backlash after she paused her concert in Chicago to ask fans to donate to a nonprofit that provides legal aid to children whose parents have been deported under the Trump administration. The eight-time Grammy winner made the request Friday during the opening night of her "Middle of Nowhere" tour at the United Center, which also marked her 38th birthday. She used the moment to steer fans toward the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights, a Chicago-based group that pairs volunteers, attorneys and social workers with unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in government custody.
"It's a wonderful organization, and they help give aid, legal aid, and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly," Musgraves said. "It's not a political thing. It's just, these kids need help." Even giving 50 cents would mean a lot to her, she added, and fans who chose not to give were fine too.
The crowd cheered loudly. Newsweek reached out to Musgraves' agent via email for comment. The backlash spread across conservative media and social media over the weekend after clips of the moment circulated online.
" What is an unfair deportation?" Fox News personality Tomi Lahren asked on X. Newsmax host Rob Schmitt took a broader shot at the genre: "Nowhere is safe from libtards. Not even country music." Other social media users accused Musgraves, who is worth an estimated $15 million, of hypocrisy for asking fans who had already paid for tickets to contribute money.
One person pointed to families of Americans killed by people in the country illegally, arguing they deserved a similar plea from the stage. Another suggested Musgraves shift her attention to the giant disco ball props used during her performance of "Rhinestoned" rather than fan donations. Musgraves has backed the Young Center before.
In April, she partnered with the resale platform Depop to sell pieces from her wardrobe, with proceeds going to the group. In May, she invited three teenage brothers from a mariachi band to open several Texas shows weeks after their family was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Federal sources told Fox News Digital that ICE made roughly 51,000 arrests in July, a monthly record that topped June's total of about 43,000.
